Displayed here are various examples of different writing projects I have accomplished. Through these different pieces, I have learned proficiency in many different types of writing, be it professional, creative, nonprofit, or blogging style.

SAMPLE 1: FloSports

From December 2018 until currently, I am a writer for FloSports, specifically FloGymnastics. I freelance content create multiple articles weekly and pitch all my own article ideas. One example of my work can be found by clicking the icon to the left, but more are available on the FloGymnastics website.

SAMPLE 2: Ms. Magazine

In the fall of 2018 I was an editorial intern for Ms. Magazine. During this time I wrote original articles for the Ms. Magazine Blog daily, interviewed people for articles, captured images of events for articles and social media, created the magazine's National News section, and fact checked other writers for articles to be published in the print magazine. You can see my published work through Ms. Magazine by clicking the image to the left.

While working and interning for the oldest feminist magazine in the United States, I learned about writing news articles in a timely matter, fact checking, and gained excellent research and writing skills. It also gave me knowledge about how nonprofit writing works, from the idea phase to the published piece.

SAMPLE 3: The UnEdit

In August 2018, I got a freelance piece published with The Unedit, a blog that focuses on feminism and body positivity. Through this experience, I gained the experience of publishing a freelance article with a site that has  50k unique visitors a month, 10k followers on their social media channels, and is viewed in 175+ countries. You can read the article by clicking on the image to the left.

SAMPLE 4: Project Consent

In the fall of 2018 I began running the Twitter account for Project consent, an online campaign and social movement promoting awareness and education about consent. I posted content on Twitter about rape culture, current events, helping survivors, and educating the public about consent. I currently work for Project Consent's Social Media Team.

Through this experience I am learning about managing multiple social media pages, using Hootsuite, Canva, and other apps to plan social content, and how to creatively create engaging content.

SAMPLE 5: Mueller Photography

I was the main professional writer at Mueller Photography. At this photography studio, clients work with the photographer, Adam, to create family portraits, wedding photographs, senior portraits, engagement portraits, newborn photoshoots, and much more. After the customers capture memories with Adam, I wrote a story about them that was featured on our blog. I wrote about the people in the images, photography as a whole, and the city of La Crosse to create a post their family and friends will love to view while they browse their image collection - click the image to see! I also created posts for Mueller Photography’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

Throughout this experience I gained professional communication skills, especially written ones. I learned how to use OneNote, a content creation platform I was previously unfamiliar with, which I adapted to quickly, as using many forms of technology to produce content on is something I am flexible with. My knowledge about the world of art and photography expanded through working with my co-workers who edit and retouch the images, and with Adam who creates the portraits. Once the portrait session was put on OneNote by the administrative assistant, I had five days to create and publish the content for the family or couple, which helped my time management skills and creativity.

SAMPLE 6: The Odyssey

For two whole years I wrote for The Odyssey, an online blog that enriches people’s lives with new and edgy ideas to build an engaged millennial audience. To be a part of Odyssey, one must submit an article or listicle weekly and be a part of a team that connects online to share writing tips and article ideas. The Odyssey is an unpaid volunteer position that publishes their content through social media sharing - click the image to see my work!

Through this experience I gained many skills including awareness of blogging and social media creation, improving my creative writing, and creating an online presence. Creating blog ideas weekly on top of school and work takes both creativity and time management, and running my own content platform has taught me many lessons about capturing audience’s attention on social media.

SAMPLE 7: New Horizons Women's Shelter

New Horizons is a women’s domestic and sexual abuse shelter in the La Crosse community. I’ve volunteered my time there an average of 2-6 hours a week from June 2017 - June 2018, writing their content. I thrive in a setting where I can combine my passion for social justice and equality with my love for writing and content creation - click the image to see samples of an annual appeal letter, press release, and sponsorship letter.

Throughout my continued time there I’ve learned how to write many new forms of professional writing as well as work successfully for a nonprofit organization. I am the sole creator of the newsletters and understand how to create and publish newsletters from start to finish that are sent to well over 2,000 people. I created media releases that are sent to various media outlets including T.V., radio, newspapers, and local publications. I also gained experience creating annual appeal letters and sponsorship letters, which are critical in securing donors for nonprofit organizations. This writing experience has helped diversify my writing knowledge and become someone who has found success with multiple types of professional writing.

SAMPLE 8: Explore La Crosse

Explore La Crosse is a company that promotes both tourism in La Crosse and gets La Crosse residents to participate in events in their community. I wrote articles as a guest blogger that were published on both their professional website and Facebook page. My article “5 Haunted Places in La Crosse, WI” was shared hundreds of times on their Facebook page! Although I only created content for them for eight months as a guest blogger, I gained a lot from the experience. Click the image to go to the content I created for Explore La Crosse. Once you are on their website, click around to discover more about the company I wrote for.

I communicated with my boss only through email, so we had to be creative in establishing what content he wanted and if I was creating what he wanted to see, which improved my interpersonal communication skills. I published articles and listicles that were similar styles to my personal blog, but I now learned how to publish these in a business setting.

SAMPLE 9: Independent Research

My communication studies major finished with a three-semester long capstone. During the first class we studied theory, the second research methods, and during my final semester we conducted a research project of our choosing from start to finish. I chose to study the transition female college students undergo with their body image journey as they move from constant family discourse around body image to living with female roommates their age and hearing their communication about body image through qualitative research.

From start to finish this project took over 400 hours worth of work and I came away with many lessons. I learned how to conduct research and was lucky enough to work side-by-side with an associate professor of communication studies who is an expert on undergraduate research. I completed an entire research paper, although I had never previously written one before. I learned how to interview and collect participants for a research study while protecting their confidentiality, analyzing the data, and writing up the results. This project enhanced my decision-making and problem-solving skills, written and oral communication skills, and both interpersonal and professional communication.

SAMPLE 10: The Racquet

During my sophomore year at UWL I wrote for The Racquet, the university newspaper. I wrote articles weekly to be published as the main features reporter. One of my articles was even published in USA TODAY College, a popular news website for college students under the Campus Life section and got over 500 shares.

From this position I gained experience writing for a newspaper, writing and editing my own work, and working to meet a deadline.
